ProTip: Automatically Add a Timestamp When an eSign Field Is Completed

With just a few clicks you can automatically capture a timestamp upon eSign field completion

Want to create an electronic signature that captures the exact time and day that a form user signs an eSign field? Leveraging the GoFormz Calculation Builder, you can automatically populate a timestamp right after an eSign field has been signed!

Rather than using the Date and Time field, a Text field with a calculation can be used for this instance. This calculation will not only help save time and make form filling a breeze, but it will also record accurate data which can be vital for operations that require audit trails or timely decisions.

Here’s how to get started:

First Things First - Add an eSign field to your Template

Before you can take advantage of collecting auto-populated timestamps, you must have an eSign field set up. Simply drag and drop one of the eSign fields (signature or initials) onto your Template and name that field accordingly. It’s best practice to name your form fields, especially when using the GoFormz Calculation Builder. For example, if you have 100 different form fields on one of your mobile forms, it may be difficult to navigate through the form without knowing what fields are being answered - naming your fields gives you the opportunity to properly organize your form data.

Next, Add a Text Field to Your Template

Usually timestamps are found directly next to any signature field, for clear accurate data. This example will follow suit, but your timestamp can be placed anywhere on your digital form. Begin by dragging a Text field from the Template Fields panel onto your Template. On the right-hand side of your screen in the Properties Panel, add a Name for your Text field.

Finally, Add a Calculation to Your Text Field

Still in the Properties Panel, locate the Default Value, and add the following calculation to the Calculation Builder:

=IF([Name of your Text Field] <> "",Now(),"") 

Please note: Whatever your field name is for your Text field, will be the name that you include in the brackets (where ‘Name of your Text Field’ is stated). 

Once you ‘Publish’ your Template, you will now be able to automatically capture a timestamp when an eSign field is completed!
